The Iowa City Shelter House is a non-profit organization that has provided housing and supportive services to the homeless of Southeast Iowa since 1983.  It is Johnson County’s only general use homeless shelter, providing transitional shelter to men, women, and children, including the disabled and elderly.  Their mission is to provide shelter, basic, and transitional resources, while encouraging self-sufficiency, to any person in our community who is homeless.

They are currently located at 331 N. Gilbert Street in Iowa City but will be moving to a new facility in Fall 2010.  Opportunities to directly volunteer are varied so contact them for specifics if you want to venture beyond the two suggested below.

Opportunities

  • There are always needs for specific types of donated items used by those staying at the shelter.  There is an updated list on their web.
  • Another ongoing need is providing an evening meal to the residences.  They serve 30-40 homeless men, women, and children every night.  How to sign up with specific instructions is also located on their website.  The church office also has a handout with ideas on helps for doing the evening me.
